Xgene
has made a discovery concerning the regulation of gene expression.
Gene expression is the process by which the information encoded in
DNA is used to produce many of the proteins essential to life. Among
the proteins produced during gene expression are hormones, enzymes
and receptors. During gene expression, a gene's DNA is transcribed
into messenger RNA (mRNA) and then the mRNA is translated
into proteins.
Recent
research has revealed that inappropriate gene expression lies at the
heart of many common diseases. Inappropriate
gene expression occurs when a gene is either turned on or off at the
wrong time or is over or under expressed (producing too much or too
little protein). Although a great deal has been learned about gene
expression and the role of genes in the body, the actual mechanism
by which genes are regulated (selectively turned on
("expressed") or off) is not understood.
Xgene
also intends to build on its expertise in skin tissue to develop
products for the skin that build on this new technology.
